Our theme chess Pieces are high quality productions that have no equal available in terms of quality and finesse. Looking for an accurate quality Isle of Lewis chess set, Sherlock Holmes, or The Battle of Waterloo? A Civil War set of pieces? Our theme chess pieces are made of crushed heavy stone or heavy crushed marble and cemented with high quality resin, then finished by artisans to an accurate representation of the event or genre.
Collectibility:
Theme Chess Pieces are highly sought after in the collectable markets. The fact that these highly prized pieces are completely hand made makes high volume production impossible. Stock is maintained to avoid dissapointment, but at busy times of the year when gifts are particularly important, it is advisable to buy early. Delivery is normally just a few days. Because of the collectibility of this range, many of the earlier sets return substantial prices at auction. ST2001 Chess Baron Isle of Lewis Chess Pieces
Made in England. Isle of Lewis. This historic design is an important part of history - this version is made of crushed marble and bonded with high quality resin. The higher quality Isle of Lewis chess sets are generally made from either crushed stone or even better, crushed marble, then bonded with a resin. Cheaper designs can be made from plastic with artificial weighting added, or even worse, no weighting at all. The originals were carved (or chipped) from stone. Found in the early 1800's on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland they are believed to be a Norse design carved from walrus tusk dated around 1280AD. The original Isle of Lewis chess pieces are in the British Museum and the National Museum of Scotland at Edinburgh. Another indication of quality exists in the colouring. The Celtics were inhabitants of Western Europe (Ireland, Wales, Brittany and the Highlands of Scotland). They were subjected to raids by Vikings and Norsemen and our chess set is the story of a battle between the Irish King Brian Boru, and the Viking invaders at Clontarf - Dublin. TH2055 Art Deco Chess Pieces
Not just a style, or design, but more of a movement - the streamlined, geometric elegance of this beautiful chess set reflects the essence of Art Deco design. From the mid 1920s until the outbreak of the Second World War, Art Deco epitomised all that was glamorous in contemporary design. It was this style that Hollywood embraced during its golden age. Deco, popular originally in the 1920s and 30s, took its name from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, an exhibition held in Paris in 1925. There the style was first seen in the work of French designers who had been in experimenting and refining it for some years. Its origins are rooted in a reaction to the flowing motifs and fussiness of Art Nouveau with its emphasis on individual craftman made pieces. After the First World War people wanted a modern, functional style for their furniture, jewellery and decorative objects. Peter Rabbit Chess Set. The story of Peter Rabbit first appeard in a picture letter Beatrix Potter wrote to Noel Moore, the young son of her former governess, in 1893. The characters are portrayed in the individual pieces of the chess set. Encouraged by her success in having some greetings cards published, Beatrix remembered the letter seven years later and expanded in into a little picture book with black and white illustrations. After being rejected several times, it was finally published by Frederick Warne in 1902. Compare with our other two Isle of Lewis chess sets ST2001 and TH2002. As for this set, it's King Height is 3.75 inches (Full size). There are many variations of quality with Isle of Lewis chess set designs. Look for weight and detail as hallmarks of quality. Our Isle of Lewis chess sets are expertly made from crushed stone - they are substantially heavy and very detailed. The Isle of Lewis chess pieces are probably the best-known set of medieval chess pieces, and these are hand cast, hand-painted replicas of the best preserved specimens. The original Lewis chessmen were discovered on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides (off the coast of Scotland) shortly before 1831. The exact circumstances of the discovery are something of a mystery, most have a peasant stumbling accross a burial mound whilst chasing an animal, but there are numerous legends. Eighty two are in the British Museum, and the remaining 11 are in the National Museum of Scotland at Edinburgh. No board was discovered with the pieces, but a contemporary mosaic from Italy indicates that the modern 8 squares by 8 squares board of alternating dark and light colored squares was used, just as today. Each side has its own individual appearance, as each piece is slightly different, representing the hand-carved nature of the originals, but the pieces are still readily identifiable. READ MORE...

Theme Chess Sets
It's not easy getting a successful set of theme chess pieces together. The set must be representative of the occasion, setting and history. The Isle of Lewis chess set is the most famous theme chess set, recognised the world over. The chess pieces were discovered in 1831 along a deserted coastline in the Hebridian Island of Lewis, off the west coast of Scotland, by a peasant while chasing a cow. He stumbled upon a stone chamber originally buried under several feet of shifting sand. In the chamber he discovered 78 chessmen carved from morse ivory (fossil remains of walrus tusks). Our representation of this important historic discovery must be true and accurate. Our example is favourably comparable to the original set now in the National Museum of Scotland. All our theme chess sets are the highest quality SAC or Mascott chess sets, whether The Battle of Waterloo, The Civil War or something more frivolous like Alice in Wonderland.
