The Story of Maruufu and 51,560


Retailers are now used to getting the scam email that asks to buy a large number of items for delivery to another country. They get the total price, then a few days later they urgently send a follow up email to say a cheque has been sent direct to our bank, but the accounts office has made an error and made the cheque out for an alarmingly higher amount - please quickly send the extra amount back in a direct bank transfer - before the bank inform that the original cheque was counterfeit.

This time, we thought we'd have a little fun. Was it possible that the scammer could be scammed? Read the story through the emails...

Yes - we can offer a discount for multiple sets:

10+ sets: 20% discount.
20+ sets: 22% discount
30+ sets: 25% discount
50+ sets: 30% discount

With a wire transfer - we always do security checks first. Otherwise that's fine. You may be aware that a common ploy is to overpay, then ask for repayment of the extra, only to find that the original payment is rescinded after a while. But I'm sure you're not trying to do that - we just have to be cautious.

I'm very sorry for the request - I can see it's very inconvenient for you.

I have 24 hour banking and so I am able to call Lloyds at any time. My account is maintained by the bank via my accountants. They say that I cannot send that much money without some real indication that the money is coming. This is reasonable. I suppose they they are concerned that I am sending you over 40,000 before I get the original money from you - but I know your cheque is on it's way. The bank requires some deposit from you that shows that you are a real person. They won't let me send that much money before I receive at least something from you. It was the bank that suggested a token amount of 25, and they asked me if I was sure that the cheque from you was coming. I've let them know that we have a good relationship and that I am confident of the funds arriving from you. You see, we were bankrupt some years ago - so I am only able to operate a bank account via the bank and a designated accountant. So I guess it's an extra safeguard for them.

So, I guess if you don't have PayPal, it will have to be a direct bank transfer. As soon as I see the 25 in my bank account I'll send you your excess payment. It's a shame you don't have PayPal - it could just be done instantly and I could actually send your money tonight - but never mind - we'll just have to wait for tomorrow when your small bank payment can show up.

Also - yes, sorry, of course I will add the 25 to the total too - I forgot that amount. So the total will be 43,832. It's fortunate that after Christmas sales that we have that much to send, so there need be no delay in getting the money to you.

Regarding the chess sets, we're intending to use DHL for the shipment, so the goods will be safe to arrive to you - they are very reliable. They are a little more expensive, but it's a more secure shipment to you. They should be ready and packed within a day or two - you'll love them!

I can't do this. My bank will not release the funds without some indication that you are a real person or a real company. This is entirely reasonable. You are asking me to send you over 40,000 which will just about clear my account out completely (my balance is currently just over 46,000 from Christmas sales). If you are unable to send 25 then you can send the smallest amount possible. Whatever it is you will get back the money when I return your excess funds.

Regarding your previous email, yes - of course you can have my contact number - but it's not a mobile number, I only have a land line. It's +44 12...100. Call at any time Maruufu. No doubt you want to know about the progress of your consignment once we ship it - I'll be your point of contact every step of the way. We want to make sure you are satisfied with the chess sets and that we can perhaps do more business in the future.

Of course, there's a simpler way to do all this if you prefer. I'll wait until your cheque clears and then send you the excess funds - it'll only take 10 days or so. It can be sent when we send you the chess sets, which are almost ready. Of course, we need to wait until your cheque has properly cleared until we return any funds - if you're unable to send the 25 or similarly small amount. So we'll just do it that way, it won't be long.

One thing I wanted to tell you Maruufu, is that the batch of chess sets you chose is much better that the pictures show - they look really great, and I know you are going to be pleased. I'll get the shipping details again from you when we're ready to ship them.
